The United States and Manifest Destiny essays During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the United States saw many problems come and go. Some problems were more important than others. However, all led to the further division of American politics. The most divisive issue in American politics during this time frame was the idea of Manifest Destiny or territorial expansion. Manifest Destiny was the idea that it was the United States' destiny to take over all of North America from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Most of the public was in favor of territorial expansion, though some politicians felt it contradicted the constitution. Strict constructionists were against territorial expansion, while loose constructionists felt expansion was the United States' destiny. Strict constructionists centered their platform around the fact that the constitution never directly states that the federal government has the right to acquire land. Those that view the constitution liberally, or loose constructionists, counter that stand by claiming the right of expansion falls under the government's implied powers. Loose constructionists and strict constructionists are the main divisive factor for the United States political parties: the Democrats and the Whigs. One of the supporters of Manifest Destiny was Democrat, James Polk who served as president from 1844 to 1848. Polk was strongly in favor of expanding the United States to the Pacific. This opinion won him the election of 1844. That year Henry Clay, a well known and loved figure in American politics, ran and was expected to blow, little known, Polk of the charts. The only problem was Clay was nervous about territorial expansion. He did not want with Mexico and was unsure of the constitutionality of expanding. And to add salt into the wound, weââ¬â¢re not working, many of us are still relying on our parentsââ¬â¢ pocket for money. However, donââ¬â¢t be disappointed because our countryââ¬â¢s neighbor up north is a cheap alternative for a fun, memorable travel destination. Thailand is a land where people speak in high notes and tom yam is a word synonymous with the term, everyday food. Before, Bangkok started out as a small trading centre and a port some 200 years ago. Today, with the influx of modern technology mixed with the beauty of its illustrious past, there are a mass variety of things to do In Bangkok. Be it eating in neon lighted side restaurant, visiting dazzling temple, artfully sculpted palaces to floating market, and shopping in fancy shopping malls, each has an intriguing story to tell. If you love the distinctive flavor of coconut, chilli, lemon grass, lime and spices, eat all you can while in Bangkok. From mango rice, tom yam noodles to Thai Hakka noodles and sharks fin soup, it caters to any taste buds. Mango rice is basically glutinous rice mixed with condensed milk and sweet mango. While it may seem simple to prepare, the Thais take it to another level. Next, Thai tom yam has always been very tasty with a good balance of sourness and saltiness with a pinch of sweet taste but if you canââ¬â¢t take spicy things, this will not appeal to you as it is also mightily spicy. Just eating a bowl of tom yam noodles sent tears spewing from my eyes but it kept me wanting more. Bangkok is also famous for fried creepy crawlies. Cockroaches, grasshoppers, crickets and worms are fried in boiling hot oil and mixed with black pepper plus a bit of MSG for extra taste. Many find them to taste like normal snacks but I didnââ¬â¢t have the guts to try it. Just looking at it was scary. Now that you know food is a must try in Bangkok, letââ¬â¢s look into the sight-seeing part. If youââ¬â¢ve a taste for historic temples, Wat Arun situated at the side of the Chao Phraya River is one of the many temples present and preserved in Bangkok is one you should not miss. What sets this apart from the rest is that King Taksin found shelter in this particular temple during a fight with the Burmese army. During his reign, he later renamed it Wat Cheang which means Temple of Dawn and was one of the chief temples that enshrined rare Buddha sculptures. Taking pictures with the beautiful architecture and craftsmanship is one moment that will leave a lasting memory about Bangkok. Tip, during your short trip there, side stalls renting historic clothes of the beautiful Siam servants can be worn to spice up your time there. No visit to Bangkok would be complete without an introduction to the floating market. Everything is done on boats like selling, buying and eating. The market gets up early so must you If you want to share in this uniquely Thai experience. While it may seem like a shock to some, there is also a condom restaurant called Cabbage amp; Condoms. The name may bring a lot of controversy but this particular restaurant was actually opened by the ministry of Thailand to increase awareness about family planning and safe sex. Though this restaurant carries a good cause, the unique atmosphere and good food makes the place a must go when one visits Bangkok. Well, thatââ¬â¢s all for interesting places to visit. And here comes my favourite part, shopping. Bangkok can also be classified as a shopping haven and it has more than enough shopping malls to suit every lifestyle. For students like you and I, places like Platinum Mall, MBK and Chatuchak Market are enough to make you literally shop till you drop. MBK is a mega mall that houses about 2,000 shops and sells things that range from clothing, accessories, bags to furniture, electronic products and stationery items. Naraya, a famous fashion line for women created in-house in Thailand has their shop open in MBK. If money isnââ¬â¢t a primary concern, do drop by at Naraya for a visit as you would not be disappointed. I wasnââ¬â¢t. Platinum Mall should appeal to many as it is a mall that has thousands of wholesalers operating inside. Like MBK, Platinum Mall sells almost everything and most importantly has clothes that is priced half as much as you see in Malaysia. Chatuchak Market is alike Platinum Mall except for the fact that it is open air. Here is a fun fact about this market that would make you go wow. Can you imagine a sum of 40 football fields is actually equal to a Chatuchak Market? Thatââ¬â¢s why finding a particular shop in the market is like finding needle in a haystack. Young businessmen always try their luck to sell their own manufactured items, Thai snacks can be found abundant and special shaved coconut drink with coconut ice-cream are sold in Chatuchak Market. Trust me, it is mouth-watering. As shopping takes up a lot of leg strength, one can unwind through Thai massages. Bangkokââ¬â¢s spas are your inner-city gateways to seventh heaven. But before you go finding one, be sure to find reputable and pay a little extra because you donââ¬â¢t know what happens behind the scenes. Quality filled spas offer serene atmospheres and highly trained masseuse that will definitely take the tiredness away from you. If youââ¬â¢re on a budget and would like to travel, I highly recommend Bangkok. Especially if youââ¬â¢re game for an adventure, Bangkok offers an exotic culture with the hustle and bustle of the city and it is definitely one city that offers countless amounts of activities. Just listening to the guide will not justify the fun these activities bring when experienced in real life. The way republicans perceive freedom has roots which can be traced back to the day of the Roman republic. According to the Romans, the simple fact of one not suffering any interference did not warrant to be considered as liberty, they argued that one could in effect be a slave without any master whatsoever, but still be viewed as not being free. According to the Romans, being free was to be of equal or even full party to the Roman law, a free person was an individual who happened to be protected in the same respect as all other persons by the Roman law and in effect was considered to be wholly incorporated as a citizen into the Roman body politic (Braithwaite & Pettit, 2002). Under the republican theory, a person could be considered to fully enjoy negative liberty if the person happens to be exempted from all the constraints that may happen to be imposed by the blameworthy or intentional actions of others in choosing specific given options. These options may include things such as hobbies which he is able to perform with his own intelligence and strength, in effect, these options are those things that the person is capable of doing without any benefit from any unique circumstances or from any of his colleagues. We Are Blessed to Have Trees & Plants
This poem is written by Ruskin Bond. In this poem the poet shares the thoughts of his grandmother who was of the opinion that the house that has trees around is blessed. For this purpose the poet planted a tree which is six months old and is growing fast. He believes that in six years time the tree would grow and give shade so that his house will also be blessed. I think the world and its inhabitants are blessed to have trees and plants. Trees are important, valuable and necessary to our very existence. It's not too hard to believe that, without trees we humans would not exist on this beautiful planet. In fact, some claim can be made that our mother's and father's ancestors climbed trees ââ¬â another debate for another site. Still, trees are essential to life as we know it and are the ground troops on an environmental frontline. Our existing forest and the trees we plant work in tandem to make a better world. Below are the reasons why trees are important for us. Trees Produce Oxygen Let's face it; we could not exist as we do if there were no trees. A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year. What many people don't realize is the forest also acts as a giant filter that cleans the air we breathe. Trees Clean the Soil The term phytoremediation is a fancy word for the absorption of dangerous chemicals and other pollutants that have entered the soil. Trees can either store harmful pollutants or actually change the pollutant into less harmful forms. Trees filter sewage and farm chemicals, reduce the effects of animal wastes, clean roadside spills and clean water runoff into streams. Trees Control Noise Pollution Trees muffle urban noise almost as effectively as stone walls. Trees, planted at strategic points in a neighborhood or around your house, can abate major noises from freeways and airports. Trees Slow Storm Water Runoff Flash flooding can be dramatically reduced by a forest or by planting trees. One Colorado blue spruce, either planted or growing wild, can intercept more than 1000 gallons of water annually when fully grown. Underground water-holding aquifers are recharged with this slowing down of water runoff. Trees Are Carbon Sinks To produce its food, a tree absorbs and locks away carbon dioxide in the wood, roots and leaves. Carbon dioxide is a global warming suspect. A forest is a carbon storage area or a ââ¬Å"sinkâ⬠that can lock up as much carbon as it produces. This locking-up process ââ¬Å"storesâ⬠carbon as wood and not as an available ââ¬Å"greenhouseâ⬠gas. Trees Clean the Air Trees help cleanse the air by intercepting airborne particles, reducing heat, and absorbing such pollutants as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. Trees remove this air pollution by lowering air temperature, through respiration, and by retaining particulates. Trees Shade and Cool Shade resulting in cooling is what a tree is best known for. Shade from trees reduces the need for air conditioning in summer. In winter, trees break the force of winter winds, lowering heating costs. Studies have shown that parts of cities without cooling shade from trees can literally be ââ¬Å"heat islandsâ⬠with temperatures as much as 12 degrees Fahrenheit higher than surrounding areas. Trees Act as Windbreaks During windy and cold seasons, trees located on the windward side act as windbreaks. A windbreak can lower home heating bills up to 30% and have a significant effect on reducing snow drifts. A reduction in wind can also reduce the drying effect on soil and vegetation behind the windbreak and help keep precious topsoil in place. Trees Fight Soil Erosion Erosion control has always started with tree and grass planting projects. Tree roots bind the soil and their leaves break the force of wind and rain on soil. Trees fight soil erosion, conserve rainwater and reduce water runoff and sediment deposit after storms.

The paths of water through the hydrologic cycle One of the most fundamental principles in hydrology and ecology is the hydrologic cycle. This cycle represents the process of water circulations from the oceans, atmosphere, land and back to the ocean.à The energy driving the cycle is from the solar/sun and forces of gravity. The process is continuous, and is a global wide process ensuring that every water drop on earth is part of the system (Harper et al n.d). At the beginning of the process, water from the seas, lakes, wetlands, rivers gain energy from the sun and get transferred to the atmosphere as vapor. The sun provides the energy to transfer water from oceans, lakes, rivers, wetlands, bare soil, vegetation, and vegetation to the atmosphere as a water vapor in a process called evaporation. Initially in plants, soil water rises through living plants to the atmosphere is called transpiration. The simultaneous occurrences of the two processed is called as evapo-transpiration. As the density of water in the atmospheres increases and due to force of gravity, the water fall on the earth service in the form of precipitation or rains. Some of the rainfall is intercepted by the vegetation cover. In the process, intercepted rainfall drip to the soil and some of the water evaporates back to the atmosphere again. The rain water that reaches the ground is the net rainfall. On the earth surface, portion of the water enters the soils profiles in a process called infiltration. The water that that is not infiltrated flows on the land depending on the topography and gravity. In the process of flowing, some of the water also continues to be infiltrated into the soil profiles. The flowing water gets to the river and eventually to the lake and the seas where the process starts all over again (Harper et al n.d). à An à example of a specific food chain Like in any other typical food chain, the main source of energy in is the sun which enables the grass manufacture its on food through the process of photosynthesis. The grass therefore becomes the producer since; it is this energy that will flow through the food chain. The grasshoppers which feed on the grass are eaten by snakes which are the secondary consumers. Hawks feed on snakes which in this chain is the tertiary consumer. All the animals in the chain get decomposed by fungi and all the energy in the nutrients is returns back to the soil for the plants (Tarbuck et al. 2008). Characteristics of food chains Various analyses into various food chains have shown a decrease in the number, energy and biomass occupying each tropic level in the food chain. This results in the ecological pyramid. à There are three ecological pyramids, namely pyramid of numbers, of energy and of biomass. In a typical food chain, members in each successive highly tropical level are fewer in numbers. Likewise, the pyramid of energy depicts reduced amount of energy and matter transferred through food to the successive higher tropical levels. This implies that there is larger amount of energy in the form of food at the level of producers than at the primary consumers. Similarly, at the tertiary consumer level, or secondary carnivores is produces the leas a mount of energy. The pyramid of biomass in the same way indicates that ââ¬Ëthe total weight of dry matterââ¬â¢ in the food chain decreases as you approach the tertiary consumers or higher tropic levels (Tarbuck et al. 2008). Differences between geographerââ¬â¢s and à biologistââ¬â¢s approach to the study of organisms In study of organisms in the ecosystems, geographerââ¬â¢s approach is different from biologistââ¬â¢s. In the study of the organismsââ¬â¢ distributions, geographers investigate spatial patterns and dynamics all the interrelationships between the species and the environment.à While the geography is concerned with the natural non living environmental, the biologist in concerned with organisms and those features that adapt them to the environment and all elements that support life in the particular habitats (CCER, 1997). Biomes and zoogeographic regions A biome is geographical sections of the earth often called ecosystems, defined by similar climatic conditions as depicted by similarity in patterns of communities of animals, plants and types of souls in them. They are composed of biotic and abiotic factors. Such factors as plant structures e.g. species of trees, shrubs, and grasses; leaf sizes and shapes; plant spacing (forest, woodland, savanna), and climate define the boundaries of the biomes. A zoogeography is region is any of the six geographical divisions of the world selected for ecological researches and studies about the distribution of non-aquatic animals. The region are also called faunal regions which consists of the Nearctic (North America), the Palearctic, the Neotropical (South America), the Afrotropical (formerly Ethiopean) (Africa south of the Sahara), the Oriental (Asia south of the Himalayas) and the Australasian (Australia, New Zealand and nearby islands). These regions were demarcated for studies only and not naturally defined like the biomes. Compare/contrast the floral characteristics Desert and Tundra biomes While the deserts are naturally hot, the tundra is usually cold. While the deserts are located around the equator, tundra is located near the poles. Both deserts and tundra experience short and minimal rainfalls of as little as 10 inches or less per year. In both livings are able to adapt accordingly, though in the deserts they adapt to hot weather conditions while in the tundra organism adapt to cold weather. In since both tundra and deserts each covers around 20% of the earthââ¬â¢s surface (Tarbuck et al. 2008). For example in the British Colombia, on the sloppy mountainous regions, the climates gets warmer and less wet as the elevation decreased from the lower altitude of the mountains. Theoretically, slope affects: The extent of water infiltration into the soil: the magnitude of soil erosion, and Vegetation distribution. What are the soil-forming factors? Apart from topography, there are other factors that affect the process of soil formation which include the following: Parent material: these are unconsolidated material or the type of stratum rocks in which soil development begins at the core of the earth. Climate: average long time whether condition such as rainfall and temperatures Biota: the composition of living biotic factors such as vegetation, human activities microbes, soil animals etc. Topography: the element of elevation or slope or tilting. Time: the age of the parent materials in the process of soil formation The interaction of these factors explains the differences in soil profile, type or structure within and between regions. Explain the importance of the nature of the parent material to soil formation and type. The nature of the parent materials largely affects both texture and the mineral compositions of the soil. Continental drift and Wegenerââ¬â¢s tectonic theory of Pangaea breaking up since the time of 5 separate continents 450 million years ago. The shapes of the continents and geological studies provide sufficient evidence that the earthââ¬â¢s surface was initially one piece of land mass. Initially there was one large land mass which geologists have give n the name Pangaea. Geologists argue that mechanical and chemical processes of volcanoes and earth quakes in the earthââ¬â¢s stratum caused weakening of the land mass which eventually led to breaking into smaller pieces of land masses. The continued process further caused the drifting further and separation to the extent of todayââ¬â¢s positioning of the continents. The drift theory allude that the movement of the land masses is only to an extent of 200Km (Van, 1994). Contrastingly, Wegenerââ¬â¢s recent tectonic theory claims that the ach of the continent have moved for up to at least 7000km since the breakup of the Pangaea. While the theory does not provide evidence of motions, satellite measurements confirm the specific continental and regional crustal strains and stresses and the direction of movements. The Pleistocene and an interglacial stages Geologic time has been somewhat difficult and complicated to describe using animal sciences even despite the availability of fossils records. Pleistocene scientifically describes a period 1.9 million to 10,000 years ago usually characterized recognizable changes in animal fossils. The fossils indicate extinctions or enormous environmental changes since then. Scientists believe that we are in the glacial stage and that this Pleistocene period is over since there has never been significant change in the species or evolution after the 10000 years ago. All though it is not easy to sum up the actual events from each region, scientists agree that the beginning of the Pleistocene era began with an overall global cooling and the entire process is entire over. First proposed in 1839 by British geologist Charles Lyell, the Pleistocene studies explains the sequence or many of layers of rocks (Dickins et al, 1992). Later, other geologistsââ¬â¢ researches and studies in Europe and other continents revealed that glaciations had occurred at about the same time. Some evidence of deposited strata was found in Italy. Eventually, further researchers and analysis compiled together all the evidence which confirmed that the Pleistocene was a period of great global cooling.
